Theresa's Two Tier Patio and Fire Pit
Theresa loved the idea of a fire pit, but was not able to have one on her wooden deck that was just built. We were also faced with a slope on this project that required doing a two tier patio.
Our Solution:
A two-tier patio to work with the slope, and a fire pit built into a stone base. Read on to learn how we approached this project.
Before:
Its difficult to tell in this picture, but we were faced with a slope on this project. This space was essentially useless as a grass slope. And Theresa loved the idea of a fire pit, but was not able to have one on her wooden deck that was just built.
With tight access between the houses, we were forced to use a smaller excavator to do the initial digging. Approximately 10-12 inches of soil was removed to make room for our open grade base. It is very important to dig down until you find soil clay soil.
ShegaScapes installs our paver patios on what is called an 'open base'. Which essentially is a gravel base that allows for optimal drainage. The majority of patios fail for one reason and that is poor drainage. So that means no sand or stone dust on our sites!
Polymeric sand is swept into the joints, and then sprayed with water to activate it. It will harden and create a barrier to stop weeds and will lock everything into place. A plastic edging is also installed around the perimeter to hold the edge pavers in place.
A retaining wall was necessary due to the drastic drop off at the edge of the patio. We installed a small mulch bed with drainage pipe between the wall and patio. It also serves as additional safety in the case of someone stepping off the patio.
